WHAM is the Winnipeg Headingley Aero Modellers. We are a club of 75 members who enjoy all aspects of radio controlled (R/C) aero modelling. Our members range in age from 10 to 83. Our R/C skill levels range from new beginners to experienced flyers. Beginners have ranged in age from 14 to 64. It is never too late to start the hobby. Our flying field is 15 acres and we have one large well-groomed grass runway, fenced pit (setup) area and two parking areas. Directions to the airfield can be found below....

R/C flight training is available to club members at no charge. Our instructors are volunteers, so there may be a waiting list to get an instructor assigned to you. Students are taken on a first come first served basis. The Chief Flying Instructor will be able to tell you more about the flight training program. Most beginners will not have the skills to fly R/C aircraft and should not attempt to fly their model without prior flight training. A R/C flight training guide is available at our web site. The WHAM web site has links to various web sites that provide information on starting the R/C aero modelling hobby.
The annual WHAM membership fee is $55.00. Each new member also pays a one-time field fee of $35.00. WHAM is a chartered member of MAAC (MODEL AERONAUTICS ASSOCIATION OF CANADA) and it is a requirement that all WHAM club members be members of MAAC for insurance purposes. MAAC provides insurance coverage by the standard MAAC group liability insurance policy. Check out the MAAC web site http://www.maac.ca/ for more information about MAAC. MAAC membership can be applied for online from the MAAC site. You are responsible for applying for MAAC membership (2011 cost $75.00 per year), if you plan to fly at the field. Proof of MAAC membership must be provided before flying at the WHAM field. The plane, radio and support equipment will cost around $500.00 to get started.
Anyone interested in joining our club should:
The WHAM R/C flying field is located five kilometers west of the junction of Saskatchewan Avenue (PR 425) and the Perimeter Highway (PTH 101). The Assiniboia Downs Racetrack is on the SW corner of this intersection. As you head west on Saskatchewan Ave. at around the five kilometers mark, look for the R/C airfield to the south (if you reach the intersection of Dodds Road you have gone too far West). A sign marking the airfield entrance is on the south side of Saskatchewan Avenue (PR 425) at the lane leading to the field.
You can also get to the WHAM R/C airfield, by turning North at the junction of Lyons Road (RCMP Station on right) and the Trans Canada Highway (PTH 1 West). Drive North on Lyons Road for 1.6 km, then turn East on PR 425 (Saskatchewan Avenue) and drive another 1/2 km. Look for the club R/C airfield to the south, a sign marking the airfield is on the south side of the PR 425 at the lane leading to the field.
